Puivert is a pretty village in the Haute Vallée de l'Aude. It has a swimming lake with a sandy beach and a museum of music and local history. The Cathar Castle, a centre for music and jousting in the Middle Ages, featured in "The Ninth Gate", and is open all year round. The gliding club offers experience flights over the beautiful surrounding area, and Puivert is a great base for hiking and cycling - or for day-trips by car to nearby castles, lakes, caves and mountains. Or arrive at the castle on horseback, on a trek arranged by the Puivert riding stables.
The village has two restaurants, a coffee shop, and a bar/café by the lake. The village brewery offers tasting and direct sales of their artisan beer, and the dairy farm sells fresh milk at milking time, when you can meet Bernard and Carmen's 35 cows. There is a grocery shop and bread shop in the village, and a daily bus service to the nearby towns of Quillan and Limoux.
In summer there are weekly night markets with music, and a spectacular firework display by the lake in mid-July.
Green Horizons is just 5 minutes' walk from the village.
